Clinical Experience Presented at International Congress on “En face” OCT imaging – Advances in OCT – OCT Angiography (December 12-13, Rome, Italy)
December 16, 2014 – Heidelberg, Germany – Heidelberg Engineering GmbH demonstrates OCT Angiography for the SPECTRALIS diagnostic imaging platform.
“The SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography provides a three dimensional reconstruction of the perfused microvasculature within the retina and choroid. In contrast to traditional fluorescein and ICG angiography the retinal and choroidal blood flow can be detected without the need to inject any dye and can be analyzed layer-by-layer using the en-face visualization. Although the clinical evaluation of OCT angiography is ongoing, the clinical potential of this new technology is tremendous,” explains Prof. Gabriel Coscas, Paris, France.
The SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography performs sequential OCT cross-sectional scans to detect motion of scattering particles such as erythrocytes within the eye’s vasculature. Key for this technology are high-resolution OCT scans, and the ability to repeatedly measure the same location at the retina.
“The SPECTRALIS system combines a 70 kHz A-scan rate with Heidelberg Engineering’s proprietary TruTrack high-speed active eye tracking, to provide unmatched high-resolution OCT images. With the transverse section analysis the system is able to virtually dissect finest structures of the vasculature non-invasively,“ mentions Dr. Jan Dechent, product manager at Heidelberg Engineering.
The OCT Angiography feature will be based on the recently announced OCT2 module for the SPECTRALIS diagnostic imaging platform. All expandable SPECTRALIS systems, those purchased with the Advanced Upgrade Package or with the MultiColor module, can be upgraded to the OCT2 module and OCT Angiography. The OCT Angiography module is another example of the outstanding SPECTRALIS value proposition to extend the life and function of the equipment, making new and meaningful technological developments available to existing customers.
